Sure, the city of Porto, with its stunning architecture, unique atmosphere, and abundance of amazing sights, is a fantastic destination for a long weekend break.
While there is no bad time to visit this gem of Portugal, each season has something you should keep in mind before planning a trip. The summer months are the peak of the tourist season, so the city tends to become very crowded, and the prices for hotels and sightseeing tours skyrocket. The late spring and the velvet season, starting in late September and lasting till the middle of October, are a different story. While the weather is warm and sunny, the hotels are no longer (or not yet) overbooked, and you can enjoy the sights without the company of hundreds of strangers. The November – February period (with the exception of the Christmas season, which is crazy wherever you are) is a wonderful time for a weekend break to Porto if you want to see the city like locals do, are not afraid of rain, and travel on a budget.
Absolutely. Three days in Porto are enough to see the city’s most renowned sights, appreciate the local cuisine and the famous Port wine, and even enjoy a river cruise along the Douro River. And the city will still have plenty of awesome things left to surprise you when you return.
As mentioned above, the 3-day itinerary usually just about covers the introduction to the city’s main sights. If you are lucky to have 4 days in Porto, we recommend adding a day trip to your travel plans to explore the treasures of the nearby area, such as the spectacular Douro Valley or historic Braga.
Yes, Porto is significantly cheaper than the sun-kissed capital of Portugal. Especially when it comes to restaurants, hotels, and public transport. On average, you can buy a small bottle of water for 1 EUR (compared to 1.10 EUR for Lisbon), a regular cappuccino for 1.65 EUR (compared to 2 EUR in Lisbon), and a McMeal costs 7 EUR in both cities.
Porto is a very beautiful city, and exploring it on foot is a pleasure. But keep in mind that the city is far from flat, so walking is good as long as you don’t mind the countless hills. So make sure to pack comfortable shoes, and don’t forget that we will be only happy to organize private transfers for you upon request.
